Free AI Coding Tools for Students and Beginners (2026)
Most AI coding tools now cost $10–20 a month for full access. That adds up fast for a student. The good news: you can do a lot for free if you know where to look.
1. GitHub Copilot (free tier + student offer)
Copilot has a limited free tier inside VS Code. If you're a verified student, apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack with your college email or ID. It has included free Copilot access along with many other developer tools.
2. Windsurf
An AI code editor with a free plan for individual developers. A good choice if you want an AI-first editor without paying.
3. Gemini CLI
Google's open-source terminal agent. Sign in with a Google account to use its free allowance, which is enough for learning and small projects.
4. Cline (open source)
A free VS Code extension that can plan, edit files and run commands. You connect it to a model of your choice, including free or very cheap ones.
5. Run a model on your own computer
With a tool like Ollama you can run open coding models (Qwen, DeepSeek and others) locally, for free and offline. You'll need a decent laptop: 16 GB RAM is a comfortable minimum.
How to learn with AI (not just copy)
- Ask it to explain code line by line, not just write it.
- Write the first version yourself, then ask AI to review it.
- When something breaks, paste the error and ask why it happened.
